15 Skincare FAQ's You Didn’t Know You Needed Answered!

🧼 GENERAL SKINCARE FAQs

1. Is washing my face with just water enough?

Not unless you enjoy letting oil, sweat, and bacteria have a party on your skin! Water alone won’t break down oil-based debris like sunscreen, makeup, and pollution. Cleansers exist for a reason—use one!

2. How often should I exfoliate?

Imagine sanding down a table every single day—it’d be ruined, right? Your skin is the same! 1-2 times a week is EEEE-NOUGH for most skin types. Over-exfoliating leads to irritation, breakouts, and—get this—faster aging. Yup, LESS exfoliation might actually keep you looking younger. Leave your skin alone!

3. Does drinking water actually clear your skin?

Water is amazing for hydration, but here’s the kicker: it won’t magically erase acne or dark spots. Hydration helps your skin function properly, but glowing skin? That’s a mix of proper skincare, diet, and genetics. So yes, drink your water, but don’t expect a miracle.

🌿 OILY & ACNE-PRONE SKIN

4. Does oily skin even need a moisturizer?

Skipping moisturizer because your skin is already oily? That’s like skipping water because it’s raining outside. When you don’t moisturize, your skin OVER-produces oil to compensate. The result? Even greasier skin! The fix? A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer.

5. Will chocolate make me break out?

Not exactly! The real culprits? The killers - Sugar and dairy. They spike insulin levels and trigger oil production, leading to acne. Dark chocolate (at least 70% cacao) with little to no dairy? Totally fine! But if you’re devouring milk chocolate daily… well, your skin might have some opinions. Every single time I eat chocolate I break out. It kills me because I love it but honestly its like a staying in a bad relationship - TOXIC!!

6. Do pimple patches actually work?

YES, but only if you’re using them right. Its made out of hydrocolloid material (a gummy, gel-forming material that's commonly used in wound care). These little stickers suck out pus and gunk (gross but satisfying) from surface-level pimples. But deep, cystic acne? Sorry, patches won’t reach that far. Time to call in the big guns—like salicylic acid or a Derm visit!

🌵 DRY & SENSITIVE SKIN

7. Can I over-moisturize my skin?

Absolutely! If your skin feels greasy, congested, or suddenly breaking out, you might be overdoing it. More moisturizer doesn’t equal more hydration—your skin can only absorb so much. Stick to hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid instead of drowning your skin in heavy creams. It’s better to use it more frequently - like having a day/nighttime routine - to be able to use it more efficiently rather than overusing it!

8. Is fragrance in skincare really THAT bad?

If your skin could talk, it might say: “It depends!” The real answer should be that NO fragrance is okay. However, some people can handle light fragrance just fine, while others (especially with sensitive skin) experience irritation, redness, and breakouts. Rule of thumb: If your skin stings, burns, or gets flaky after using scented products—it’s a no-go.

9. Can I still use actives like retinol if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, but go slow. Think of retinol like hot sauce—start with a mild version before going full ghost pepper! Use it 2-3 times a week, buffer with a moisturizer, and avoid mixing it with exfoliants to prevent irritation.

🌞 SUNCARE & ANTI-AGING

10. Do I really need sunscreen if I have melanin-rich skin?

YES, YES, and YES! While darker skin tones have built-in SPF (around SPF 13), that’s not enough to fully protect against UV damage, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging. Bottom line: No sunscreen = faster aging. The sun had Vitamin D which is prominent for its healing properties! YOU ABSOLOUTELY NEED Vitamin D for way more than just Skin Care. Use that healing figure GOD made and receive its benefits!

11. Can I use coconut oil as sunscreen?

Nope , Nope & NO! Coconut oil only provides SPF 4-6, which means you're basically wearing a sheer layer of wishful thinking. If you love coconut oil, use it as a moisturizer—but when it comes to sun protection, stick to a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

12. Does sunscreen cause acne?

Only if you’re using the wrong kind! Thick, greasy sunscreens can clog pores, but lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas won’t. Look for gel-based or mineral sunscreens if you’re acne-prone.

🧪 INGREDIENTS & PRODUCT FAQs

13. Do expensive skincare products work better?

Not always! You’re often paying for branding and packaging, not necessarily better ingredients. Some of the best skincare gems are drugstore finds or even clean brands like ours! So, before dropping $200 on a serum, check the ingredient list—it’s what’s inside that counts!

14. Can I mix ALL my skincare products together?

Not unless you want a science experiment gone wrong. Some ingredients don’t play well together!
🚫 Retinol + Vitamin C = Skin irritation
🚫 Benzoyl Peroxide + Salicylic Acid = Over-dried skin
🚫 AHAs + Niacinamide = Potential redness
Always check before layering!

15. Can my skin get "used to" products, making them stop working?

Not exactly. Your skin adapts, but doesn’t become immune. What actually happens? Your skin’s needs change! Seasons, stress, and diet affect how your skin reacts to products. If something stops working, it might be time to switch up your routine—not because your skin “outgrew” it, but because it needs something different. You can always revisit using that product at a later time and it should work the exact same way!
